Investigating how the brain organizes complex tasks
The human brain is uniquely capable of planning and executing tasks that entail multiple complex steps that unfold over long periods of time. These complex tasks can be described at multiple levels of abstraction – that is, with varying levels of detail. Individual actions are linked together into task sets, which can then be engaged and switched between as a whole when needed. Intriguingly, different areas of the frontal cortex appear to represent these different levels of abstraction. I am working to better understand how these levels of abstraction are driven by the brain’s functional organization and how they influence our behavior.
